[3:2]  1 tn Heb “people.”

[4:5]  2 tn Heb “in the midst of” (so ASV).

[6:3]  3 tn Heb “may multiply greatly” (so NASB, NRSV); the words “in number” have been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[6:3]  4 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 10, 18, 23).

[10:15]  5 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 10:4.

[10:15]  6 tn Heb “take delight to love.” Here again the verb אָהַב (’ahav, “love”), juxtaposed with בָחַר (bakhar, “choose”), is a term in covenant contexts that describes the Lord’s initiative in calling the patriarchal ancestors to be the founders of a people special to him (cf. the note on the word “loved” in Deut 4:37).

[10:15]  7 tn The Hebrew text includes “after them,” but it is redundant in English style and has not been included in the translation.

[12:15]  8 tn Heb “only in all the desire of your soul you may sacrifice and eat flesh according to the blessing of the Lord your God which he has given to you.”

[12:15]  9 tn Heb “gates” (so KJV, NASB; likewise in vv. 17, 18).

[20:8]  10 tn Heb “his brother’s.”

[20:8]  11 tn Heb “melted.”

[22:21]  12 tn The Hebrew term נְבָלָה (nÿvalah) means more than just something stupid. It refers to a moral lapse so serious as to jeopardize the whole covenant community (cf. Gen 34:7; Judg 19:23; 20:6, 10; Jer 29:23). See C. Pan, NIDOTTE 3:11-13. Cf. NAB “she committed a crime against Israel.”

[22:21]  13 tn Heb “burn.” See note on Deut 21:21.

[23:10]  14 tn Heb “nocturnal happening.” The Hebrew term קָרֶה (qareh) merely means “to happen” so the phrase here is euphemistic (a “night happening”) for some kind of bodily emission such as excrement or semen. Such otherwise normal physical functions rendered one ritually unclean whether accidental or not. See Lev 15:16-18; 22:4.

[24:1]  15 tn Heb “nakedness of a thing.” The Hebrew phrase עֶרְוַת דָּבָר (’ervat davar) refers here to some gross sexual impropriety (see note on “indecent” in Deut 23:14). Though the term usually has to do only with indecent exposure of the genitals, it can also include such behavior as adultery (cf. Lev 18:6-18; 20:11, 17, 20-21; Ezek 22:10; 23:29; Hos 2:10).

[24:3]  16 tn Heb “hates.” See note on the word “other” in Deut 21:15.

[24:3]  17 tn Heb “writes her a document of divorce.”

[24:13]  18 tn The Hebrew text uses the infinitive absolute for emphasis, which the translation seeks to reflect with “by all means.”

[24:13]  19 tn Or “righteous” (so NIV, NLT).

[28:11]  20 tn Heb “the fruit of your womb” (so NAB, NIV, NRSV); CEV “will give you a lot of children.”

[28:11]  21 tn Heb “the Lord.” See note on “he” in 28:8.

[28:11]  22 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 36, 64).
